Wedding DJ Masterclass – How to Get the Best Experience

Posted on Mar 22 19

So, you’re planning your dream wedding. And you’ve decided upon a DJ for your reception entertainment. Exciting times! But also a little bit daunting, yes? You’ve got one shot at making it memorable for all the right reasons, but if you’ve never done it before, how do you know how get it right first time? Well, worry not. One of our goals at Earcandy is to try to take some of the stress out of your wedding. As part of that, we’ve put together a short guide to help you pick the right DJ for your big day.

How to Get the Best Experience from Your Wedding DJ

1. Do the groundwork

Before you book a wedding DJ, you need to know what you’re booking them for. That may sound slightly daft, but there are lots of factors that will influence whether a DJ is right for you. Or, indeed, whether you’re right for them. So. You’ll need to know:

  • Your date
  • Your venue – size, type, location and whether there are any noise or time restrictions in place.
  • Your preferred music genre – are you more Ed Sheeran or Agadoo, Jess Glynne or The Prodigy? Most DJs have a pretty big repertoire – the Earcandy DJ has library of over 6,000 tracks – but they’ll also have their own style, so you need to make sure that their style suits yours.
  • Your budget – while it’s good to have a little flexibility if you find ‘the one’, your wedding is going to be expensive enough without you spending more than you can afford on music. Keeping a loose budget in mind will keep you grounded.

2. Do your research

Research! Yay! Just exactly how you want to spend your evenings! OK, maybe not, but it’s not as dull as it sounds. Start out by asking friends and family for recommendations. If none are forthcoming, check out social media. Instagram is a great place to see wedding DJs in action. YouTube too. Nothing will help you see if you’re making the right decision like watching a performance. Social media is also a great way to check out genuine customer reviews.

3. Consider all options

OK, so you’ve decided that you want a DJ. But do you want just DJ, or do you want a DJ plus. Many couples decide to have a DJ at their wedding because they take up very little space but can still deliver an incredible vibe. However, more and more people are looking for something a little bit extra. And a DJ combo can deliver just that. DJ & Sax (above) is one of our most popular wedding packages. DJ & Beats (below) also creates quite the show. Or, if you want to go all out, the Earcandy DJ, Sax & Beats combo is a way to completely wow your guests, delivering a show that few people are likely to have seen before.

4. Ask questions

Once you’ve made your short list, get in touch with each act and have a chat. This is someone that you’re employing to make your wedding special, so you need to know that you’ll get on with them. You also need to ask questions to make sure that they can deliver what you’re looking for. So, ask about their equipment; is it professional grade; do they have contingencies if something goes wrong? Do they provide professional lighting? Can they be flexible if the speeches run over? Do they have any special requirements? Will they emcee if you want them to? What happens if they’re ill on the day of your wedding – do they work with an agency that can provide cover?

5. Read the contract

Once you’ve made your choice, it’s important to check out the fine print before you sign the contract. Hidden clauses are a distressingly common way for performers to make an extra buck, so make sure that travel fees, equipment hire, insurance, and all the nitty gritty are covered. That way, you’ll avoid any nasty surprises when the bill comes rolling in.

At Earcandy, we work with a number of professional club-experienced DJs. We have the latest sound and lighting equipment (which we also hire out, if you know someone with the talent but not the kit). And we can cater to a diverse range of tastes and styles. For us, your wedding is the most important gig that we’ll ever cover. So, we will do everything we can to get things not just right, but better than you ever expected.
